The Bookseller and New York Observer are reporting that Charlie Redmayne, the chief digital officer at HarperCollins, is leaving the company to join the Pottermore team as CEO of the company. Neil Blair is quoted describing Redmayne as “a formidable talent in both the digital and publishing spheres”.
Redmayne is also quoted on his feelings about Pottermore, “a hugely exciting project which will take one of the greatest brands of literature into a digital future”. We speculate that he was chosen as the CEO for technology reasons mostly, and because of his past experience working with it.
And, with help with his past experience, he will be able to handle and fix Pottermore’s capacity issues, site problems with potions and wizard dueling, the e-shop, and to make the site run smoother all together.
Redmayne will most likely lead the company to the e-book and e-shop phase, but will still stay on as a permanent CEO. He helped HarperCollins transform to meet the needs of today’s publishing world, and will hopefully do the same for Pottermore.
Upon Redmayne’s leaving HarperCollins, CEO Brian Murray said:
Charlie has been a tremendous leader in the digital space during one of the most challenging and interesting times in book publishing. HarperCollins is in a terrific position because of Charlie’s efforts and accomplishments across all divisions around the world. We were fortunate to have such a talented digital executive for the last three and a half years, and I understand that we couldn’t expect him to live on both sides of the Atlantic forever.”
Ron Henwood, the current CEO, is only an interim, brought on to the project to handle it from launch. Charlie Redmayne will take the role as the new Pottermore CEO on November 7, 2011.
